Community grants in action: Willaston Football Club
The Willaston Football Club are kicking goals on and off the field, investing in their community’s mental health and wellbeing.
Most of the players at Willaston Football Club are men and women under 40 – the age group most at risk of suicide in Australia. Suicide is the leading cause of death for South Australians aged 15 to 44.
The club launched their mental health and wellbeing program in 2022 and have implemented multiple programs to support not just their players, but coaches, supporters and the wider Willaston community.
One initiative is undertaking Lived Experience speaker, and Sammy D foundation training, made possible through Preventive Health SA’s Suicide Prevention Community Grant Program.
The grants provide funding to South Australian community groups and non-government organisations to support state suicide prevention projects and activities. The grants aim to prevent suicide in South Australia by building compassionate, safe and resilient communities through skill building, education and training.
The next grant round for sporting and community groups will open for applications in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on our Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram for more details.
