Aboriginal families, parents and carers
Strong family connections are at the heart of Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture, spirituality and identity. Connection to family is broader than children’s parents, it involves everyone in a child’s life who help raise them and this can be grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and sometimes, members of the community. These connections are essential to the way culture, history and intergenerational knowledge is passed on, helping promote a child’s sense of belonging and cultural identity.
Ensuring Aboriginal children are raised in safe, happy and strong family environments, has positive effects on the overall health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
