Promoting healthy food and drink choices

Promoting green food and drinks will make them appealing to your customers, meaning you will sell more.

Some great ways to promote the green options you offer are:

Labelling

  • clearly label the food and drinks you offer as green, amber or red
  • include an explanation of what each colour means.

Placement

Place green food and drinks in prominent areas including:

  • at eye level on shelves and in fridges
  • at the front of cabinets and bain maries
  • in high traffic areas such as the entrances and exits of food outlets and beside cash registers.

Red items are not recommended to be placed in prominent areas.

Pricing

  • use competitive pricing, aim to price green products cheaper than amber or red products
  • increase the cost of amber and red options to offset the price of the green options on the menu.

Promotion

  • if you can, promote green options in visible areas including counters, cabinets, fridges, menu boards and newsletters
  • display green options in a tasty way
  • include green options in special offers such as meal deals, ‘two for one’ offers or loyalty cards
  • red options should not be marketed or included in special offers.
