South Australian Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy 2025-2030

The South Australian Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy 2025-2030 takes a whole-of-government Health in All Policies and harm minimisation approach to prevent and reduce the harms caused by alcohol and other drugs in the South Australian community to improve health outcomes and quality of life.

It complements and supports existing government strategies addressing the determinants of health, and aligns with government activity relating to the safety of women and children, road safety, and tobacco control initiatives.

The Strategy focuses on progressing a range of actions under five priority areas:

  1. health promotion and prevention
  2. disruption and supply reduction
  3. early and targeted intervention
  4. treatment and support
  5. engaging communities.

Four system enablers have been identified as requiring further action and investment to support the progress of the Strategy:

  1. workforce development
  2. evidence and data systems
  3. addressing stigma and discrimination
  4. partnerships.

The Strategy recognises that alcohol and other drug related harms are not experienced equally across populations, and identifies eight priority populations who are at greater risk of harm:

  1. Aboriginal peoples
  2. children and young people
  3. parents, carers and guardians who use alcohol and other drugs
  4. rural and remote communities
  5. LGBTQIA+ people
  6. people with comorbidity of mental health
  7. males aged 15-44
  8. people in contact with the criminal justice system.

The Strategy has been developed and informed by significant consultation with and contribution from a range of government and non-government agencies, health organisations, peak and research bodies, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, people with lived or living alcohol and other drug experience, and the wider South Australian community.
