Preventive Health SA Act 2024

The Preventive Health SA Act 2024 came into operation in December 2025.

The Act ensures preventive health has a permanent place in South Australia’s health system to support system leadership in the implementation of programs, policies and initiatives. This will be undertaken in partnership with a broad range of stakeholders to address the increasing burden of preventable disease.

This legislation establishes Preventive Health SA as a dedicated prevention agency leading evidence-informed and innovative action to prevent and reduce the burden of non-communicable health conditions and improve health equity, helping to drive long-lasting, positive health and wellbeing outcomes for current and future generations.

The Preventive Health SA Strategic Plan will be developed under the Act. This plan will identify preventive health and wellbeing policies, priorities and measures in order to further the objects of the Act and identify preventive health action to improve health equity for populations requiring priority consideration, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons.

The Act also establishes the Preventive Health SA Council, a statutory body providing strategic advice to the Chief Executive on preventive health policy and action.
