Unhealthy food and drink advertising on Government of South Australia buses, trains and trams

The Restriction of Unhealthy Food and Drink Advertising on South Australian Government Transit Assets policy aims to reduce the amount of unhealthy food and drink marketing that South Australians, including those most vulnerable, are exposed to every day.

The foods we eat and drink have a big influence on our health and wellbeing, yet many South Australians eat more unhealthy food and drinks than recommended. These foods are high in sugar, salt and saturated fat, and can contribute to poor health. There are a range of factors which affect our diet, a lot of which are outside of our control.

The promotion and marketing of unhealthy food and drink is one tactic used by the food industry to influence the food we choose and eat. Children and young people are more likely to be influenced by marketing tactics and are often targeted by advertisers and most of the foods and drinks advertised are unhealthy ones. To address this imbalance, Preventive Health SA is working across the community to create healthier food environments for all South Australians.

The introduction of the Restriction of Unhealthy Food and Drink Advertising on South Australian Government Transit Assets policy is part of the Government of South Australia’s commitment to creating communities and environments which make healthy food options appealing, easy to find and affordable.
