Farm Life psychologist boosts drought mental health support

We’ve funded psychologist Steph Schmidt to refresh and strengthen the Farm Life resources, supporting farmers and primary producers on-the-ground in drought affected areas.

A digital hub for farmers has been established, as well as printed versions of the Farm Life handbook, which provides farmer-informed strategies for managing stress and promoting resilience. This handbook will be used in workshops conducted by NGO partners including Breakthrough Foundation and Skylight Mental Health, and at other training and community events across communities in regional South Australia.

Additionally, funding support via the 2025-26 Suicide Prevention Community Grants continues to be awarded to eligible sporting clubs, community groups and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations in drought-impacted regions. These grants will assist in suicide postvention preparedness planning with the aim of enhancing evidence-based community response, coordination and compassion to support people bereaved by suicide to help save lives.

Over the next 12 months, Preventive Health SA funding will enable at least eight Men’s Table programs to be established across regional South Australia. Starting with the South East, this rollout will extend to each drought-impacted region. Men interested in “going beyond the banter” and joining a table, or people interested in helping support a Table in their community can find out more by visiting www.themenstable.org or calling 1800 636 782.

Following engagement with communities and other stakeholders, Preventive Health SA will continue to fund new programs and resources that foster community connection, strengthen awareness and deliver practical mental wellbeing tools for farmers and primary producers.
